Don't let it ruin your chances.

Reputation Management and Crisis Control - Business and Personal

There's no such thing as bad press?

Bad press can be a damaging thing to your personal or business reputation.

Personal: Maybe you were involved in a court case, a divorce, got arrested for oui or have other legal issues, someone is trashing your good name, or an article in the news is ruining your chances of getting a new job. With the way things are today, you can't afford to lose your chance at a new or better job, or maybe you are simply embarrassed of the search results when someone searches your name on Google. This could be a new boyfriend or girlfriend, a potential employer or anyone searching for your name.

Business: Maybe a disgruntled customer or a competitor is trashing you on the many review sites, blogs or other websites which is turning away business and costing you new customers.

Depending on your specific situation, there are ways to combat your "bad press" problems.

While it is often not possible to get the bad articles, etc... removed from the web, there are ways to bury the bad press and send it packing to the 4th, 5th or 6th page of search results and beyond. Most searchers will simply not dig deeper than the first few pages of search results, which is a good thing. But if the bad stuff is appearing above the good stuff about you or your business, you may have a serious online reputation problem.

More often than not there is something that can be done to combat your online reputation problems. Some of this will depend on your personal or business name (how common it is), how many bad items there are, where these are published and what strategy is best.

How much does online reputation management cost?

Most online reputation management cases require a long term, consistent strategy to be effective.

Without knowing your specific situation, there is no way to put a price on a strategy for you. There are many variables with each case and depending on how serious your situation is, it often takes several months to see results. It may be simple or it may not be.

With online reputation management there are no guarantees. Just because a strategy works now, does not mean it will work forever. The internet is an ever evolving landscape, especially where search engines like Google are concerned. Your bad press may get buried temporarily, but all it takes is for Google to change their algorithm and the bad press may appear again. A long term reputation repair strategy is mandatory for most online reputation cases.

That is why repairing your online reputation is not cheap. Look around online. You'll see that ORM campaigns are priced at $2,500 - $10,000 and up. High profile personal online reputation management (or internet crisis control) can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Think I'm kidding? See the following:

If a reputation management company charges too little, beware. "Even a low-end reputation management campaign will cost a couple of thousand dollars a month to do it right," Beal says.

So, if you need to clean up your online reputation, be prepared to hire a legit service and to pay a good chunk of change. via Business Insider
